Sorry if this is after the fact or whatever! You probably know this now I just saw your comment after watching the vid
He holds the violin Irish/celtic style not classical style. It stems (like many fiddling styles) from tradition where common people just picked up the instruments and played them however they wanted. Anyway it's a more traditional, respected (and more relaxed) way to hold the violin here (from Ireland)

Yes, Ashley Macisaac plays "backwards." I've heard there are parts of the world where students are taught to hold the violin this way (certainly not the US, where I'm from). I don't know if he holds it this way because this is how he learned, or if it's to show off. I know that he is capable of playing it the "normal" way because I've seen him switch back and forth mid-performance.

Is the violinist holding the violin up on his/her right shoulder??? I'm a violinist myself, and I've never seen it played like that.
