Most New Haven locals and Yale students say that Pepe's and Sally's have great pizza and a longstanding rivalry. But the owners at these Wooster Square restaurants share another side of the story.
pepe's crust is the key. chewy in the middle and charred or even burned on the ouside.they serve it on a big tray with wax paper and no dishes. the coal fired oven makes a huge difference in temp.. and flavor. go when it's not that busy.
i made pizzas at pepes for two years and as a first generation italian they are an embarassment they have several illegal mexicans working there that get paid in cash twice as much as any other employee they are a down right disgrace and all of franks grandchildren are bipolar and just plan crazy i would not reccomend eating there go to sallys
My folks were born in New Haven, and we've been going to Wooster St as long as I can remember. What's funny is that my dad often mentioned the Sally's v Pepe's rivalry... but we always went to Pepe's/Spot. I mentioned this once-- that I never had Sally's-- and they were somehow surprised.
I think the longest we ever waited was 2 hrs.
Btw, a great pizza place in Carmel, IN, is based on Pepe's. I about died when I tried it. It is VERY close!! Called Pizzology. Hot oven, fresh ingreds. Craft beers
If I were that little girl carrying the box, I'd be biting off the fingers of those trying to touch! I go to the Pepe's at Mohegan Sun WEEKLY because I'm so addicted. I drive 15 minutes, then find parking just for it :) I have stopped eating any other pizza. The rest are just garbage to me! Can't help it.
sallys by far. pepes going multible locations and ruining their reputation, and pizza.
