Perhaps they removed this segment from the final cut of Fantasia 1940 because at that time World War 2 was happening. The Valkyries are assigned by Wotan to carry the fallen soldiers of battle. The war theme might have seemed inappropriate and too grim for 1940 America.

thank you for posting this! i hope disney will do another fantasia series this time. create all those segments that didn't came to reality (especially the ride of the valkyries,)
the powerful music and its theme, this can be a very good segment for a fantasia movie

Wagner's music, said Sam Clemens, is much better than it sounds....jus like song o de south iso a lot less racist than it appears.....wut cha gonna do? So much good stuff buried under political correctness, and so much garbage current.
Sturgeons Law in action I guess....
Yoy to hoy ah Yo to hoi ah ........ride on ladies, buy you a drink later in Valhalle?

Oh well. Maybe they can recycle this for Fantasia 2050.

One joker said that he will not listen to Wagner again because of the man's racial views. Let him deprive himself and shrivel his soul ! Wagner's been dead for 140 years or so. Time to forgive ! Time to forget !!

This does not look like cut footage, but, rather, development sketches. There is a book called "The Disney that never was" covering cartoons and feature films that never made it to the finished stage. Reasons include: technology to animate 1000 characters at once did not exist, inability to crystallize the story, problems making a rogue character (Reynard) sympathetic, clashing among the staff... Thus we never had ,say, Grand Canyon Suite or Don Quixote, or Mickey Mouse smashing Mt. Rushmore

For heavens' sake, it's a legend, just like the idea of God's Holy Spirit getting a Virgin pregnant. But anyway, was Wagner responsible for Bismarck? Before Prussia annexed the rest of them, the states that produced Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Wagner, Goethe, Schiller, aye, and Schweitzer, Marx, Freud, and even Nietzsche, were as separate and distinct as Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England before Edward Longshanks, whose son Robert the Bruce defeated and drove out of Scotland in 1314.

If Fantasia ever makes another movie, they pretty much have to use this piece. I mean, seriously, that would be possibly the only Fantasia song to top the Big 3:
(Toccata and Fugue, Beethoven's Fifth, and Night on Bald Mountain). Yeah, more or less all the Fantasia songs are great, but those three really stand out to me.

@MastersoftheOpera Also, wasn't Wagner pretty well liked by the Nazi leadership?
-
not just too grim for WWII America, it was probably also "too German" AND Hitler was a big fan of Wagner's work =( . At least we still have these lovely stills to look at =)
