There were two significant solar flares in recent history.

A solar flare knocked out Quebec electric power stations in the 90s and back in 1859 the Carrington event shorted-out telegraph wires and caused some fires at telegraph offices - in those days the electricity was provided by liquid batteries with very volatile chemicals.

A major solar flare like the Carrington event could cause havoc worldwide but the most recent event (March 2012) did not cause any major disruption.

Pole shifts occur when our solar system is above or below the galactic plane (the equator of the Milky Way). Natural cycles are fairly constant but there are many variations with any long-term cycle for lots of very complicated reasons.

Both the Egyptian and Mayan calendars are also based on Precession.

Just as the tilt of the axis gives us summer and winter, axial rotation causes climate change.

However, ice ages and tropical epochs occur over a much longer cycle - ice ages occur every 100,000 years or so. Levels of carbon dioxide increase for 21,000 years during Precession according to the Lake Vostok and Epica ice core studies at Antarctica.

The ancient Greeks divided time into 12 ages based on the Precession of the Equinoxes.

This natural cycle is caused by axial rotation (wobble of the earth's axis). December 21, 2012 is the winter solstice where it is determined whether or not the "ruling" constellation has passed from Pisces to Aquarius (it's the reverse of the Zodiac - the Greek's solar calendar in the days of Plato).  The rate is 1 degree of the sky (360 like a circle) per 72 years.

Precession drives climate change.
