Usually architects spend a lot of hours trying fit rooms and corridors into the building boundaries. this is because is a very complex problem to resolve, and worst when you have a prolix behaviour. The problem is complex for at least by two main issues: One: is a weight problem because the differents requirements of the spaces rooms, orientation, ventilations, square meter.
Two: Is a multi-objective optimization, because the complete list of rooms are in some way fighting each other for the best position, the best view, the best ventilation and so on.
fortunately almost all architects are intelligent and can choose, in almost cases, a good subdivision space. But in the other hand they can spend to much time to achive their goal, and I don't want to talk about meetings.
In a simple way a Genetic Algorithm is used to spatially organize a plant, depending on their room areas and their location within the building perimeter. The process is based on a Voronoi diagram that subdivides the space and an AG their fits to set the different areas within the premises plan. The architect determine where, how many and the rooms area and the GA makes the hard work.
