UN Marks 60th World Refugee Day
To mark the 60th World Refugee Day on June 20th, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Chief, Antonio Guterres, asked nations to open their borders for refugees fleeing violence in their countries.
On Sunday, June 19th, Mr. Guterres visited the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has sheltered 20,000 refugees who have escaped unrest in Libya and Tunisia.
Mr. Guterres also requested wealthier countries to continue contributing aid and support to those crises-ridden nations.
Angelina Jolie, actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador also travelled to the island, after her trip to Turkey last week where she met with Syrian refugees.
Lampedusa continues to receive asylum seekers who are either transferred to holding centers of sent back home.
