I remember the old glass "No Deposit, No Return" bottles that you needed a bottle opener to open.

Yep. But it was really a smoke screen while Coke changed the recipe to use corn syrup instead of sugar. Corn syrup is cheaper but sugar gives a cleaner flavor; profits for Coke won out.
