Hey, If this is by ear, can I have some pointers. My luck is I randomyl stumble across the keys and then i think of a song that sounds like that. But say I have a song as my goal, how should I start?

@Liberty2431 Look op the chords on the internet, if you have these it's way easier. Then try to find the note where the music starts (maybe sing or whistle it to find the right tune). Then just try to find the melody, most of the time it isn't that hard.
