British diplomat based in Moscow has been accused by Russia of being a secret service spy.

British diplomat Chris Bowers in based in Moscow

An unnamed source within the Kremlin's intelligence services claimed UK trade official Chris Bowers had engaged in "suspicious" meetings with Chechen activists.

The source also denounced Mr Bowers as a high-ranking MI6 officer and accused him of working undercover in the 1990s as a BBC reporter in Uzbekistan.

A Russian agency quoted the source as saying: "The activities of Christopher Bowers, a counsellor at the British Embassy in Russia, and probably, simultaneously a senior officer with British Intelligence, are giving rise to questions among Russian intelligence services."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed the British acting director of UK Trade and Industry was suspected of spying, but said she could not comment on intelligence matters.

Meanwhile, a Whitehall source told Sky News: "This is unhelpful for the individual concerned, his safety and his career."

There are suggestions that Mr Bowers was singled out by Moscow due to his dealings with Anglo-Russian oil giant TNK-BP, which is locked in a shareholder dispute.

The allegation follows weeks of antagonism and growing tension between London and Moscow.

Sky's Russia correspondent Alex Rossi said: "It is an indication that the relationship between Britain and Russia is not getting any better at all.

"The Litvinenko saga is still creating a rift between the two countries.

"But in terms of investment, if you put aside the strategic industries - oil and gas - the link is actually quite good."

Political relations have been frosty since the killing of ex-KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, who died in a London hospital on November 23, 2006 from radiation poisoning.
