Please forgive the dorky format, as this was recorded for my speech class's "Informative Speech" assignment. The information covered includes a general overview of the placenta and placentaphagy, the benefits of eating your placenta, and how to prepare your placenta for consumption.

***corrections*** The video quotes "postpartum depression" at 80% based on sources that noted more general "baby blues" at rates UP TO 80%. Due to the improvisational nature of this speech, I apologize for misspeaking concerning this important clinical detail. Clinically diagnosed postpartum depression is different than the general depressed or low feelings women may experience and refer to as "baby blues," and via meta-analysis is estimated at about 13% (http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/09540269609037816). Please forgive this student error and understand that this was in no way an attempted "scare tactic" to persuade women to consume their placentas against their better judgement. **********

  • ooh ok...becuz ive kind of heard like u said the TCM one is supposed to bring out the desired nutrition value thats y i wanted to noe but i guess since we dont have too much info about it i guess we'll have to see. but i do have 1 more q if u dont mind- how long can u leave ur placenta frozen?can it be for yrs &yrs? & also the capssule form how long till the effects start to wear off.

  • @choorijamadar I was taught that the placenta can remain in the fridge or freezer about the length that you would leave any organ meat. Use your best judgement. As for the pills, as long as they are completely dry, air tight, and not exposed to direct sunlight, they should keep for years. Some people even freeze their leftover capsules to use during menopause. As for the effectiveness, it is hard to know for sure, but it is unlikely to be harmful unless obviously spoiled.

  • is the raw form healthier than the steamed& dehydrated form??cant u dehydrate it and cap it wen its raw??the dehydration dosnt take anything away frm it except moisture correct?

  • @choorijamadar It's hard to know which style of placenta preparation is 'healthier' because we don't have a lot of solid research on the variety of preparations, only anecdotal evidence. I offer my clients two methods of encapsulation, what I call "Traditional Chinese Medicine"&"Traditional Midwifery" options. The TCM includes rinsing and steaming with lemon&ginger to potentially draw the healing properties deeper; the latter would likely be more iron&nutrient rich. Both have their benefits :)

  • @choorijamadar Overall, the most beneficial means is likely a combination of raw (no dehydration at all) for the first couple of weeks followed by encapsulation, so mom can have sustained access to the benefits in a shelf-stable form. To prepare the placenta, you (or your placenta specialist) can cut small pieces and freeze them to add to smoothies or other preferred meals for the first week or two. For some women, raw is too weird, so encapsulation or tincturing are great alternatives.
