Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has asked the government to take effective steps to prevent India from constructing Tipaimukh dam in the upstream of Borak River in the Indian state of Monipur.
He also urged the government to guess the impact and importance of the matter and take the issue seriously. The Jamaat Ameer, also a former minister, said this while addressing a rally at the citys Paltan Maidan Wednesday. Dhaka City unit of Jamaat arranged the programme in protest at the Indian attempt to erect Tipaimukh dam on a transboundary river, flouting the international river and environment rules.
Maulana Nizami also said, though the credibility of the 2008 national election is questionable, Jamaat welcomed the new government for the greater interest of democracy. We hoped that the unexpected situation during the immediate-past unelected regime will end through the election. But now does anyone see any sign of good hope? he questioned.
Since the announcement of the election result, a reign of terror was unleashed, snatching of tenders became rampant and mugging in the streets became widespread. But the government failed to take any effective step to contain the crimes in order to improve the law and order in the country.
Besides, it has unleashed oppression on the opposition parties, he said accusing the government of maintaining a policy of division and disunity instead of national unity and harmony and inclusiveness.
The Jamaat Ameer asked the government to concentrate more on fundamental needs of the people and solve the problems including shortage of electricity, water and gas. He also asked to stop state-terrorism to uphold the law and order situation.
Accusing the government of politicising the bureaucracy, he stated that in a short time spanning merely four months this government has made 10 Secretaries, 20 Additional Secretaries, 39 Joint Secretaries and 29 Deputy Secretaries Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Reminding the people of the anti-Islamic attitude and activities of the Awami League, Maulana Nizami said, the government is pressing for Kudrat-e-Khuda education policy in a bid to wipe out religion from the education system.
Religious education has been absent in the policy and Madrasah education is put under lens in the name of unitrack education system which even the government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman did not implement, he said.
The government wants to withdraw Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim and trust and belief on Almighty Allah from the constitution and replace secular system in line with Indian policy.
While the government is mulling to ban Islamic political parties, it is making fields free for the communist and socialist parties, he said.
Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Muzahid and other Jamaat leaders including M Mokbul Ahmad, M Kamaruzzaman, ATM Azharul Islam, Barrister Abdur Razzak, Maulana Delwar Hossain Saidee, Hamidur Rahman Azad, MP, Maulana Abdus Sobhan, Abdul Quader Molla, Professor Muzibur Rahman, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, and M Shamsul Islam, MP, among others, spoke on the occasion with Dhaka city Ameer Maulana Rafiqul Islam in the chair.
