DIE SCHÖNE GALATEE (Pretty Galatea)
The sculptor Pygmalion creates a statue of a beautiful woman, Galatea, which the rich Mydas wants to buy.
Pygmalion prays that Venus will bring the statue to life, but Galatea, as a living woman, causes turmoil by her behaviour and Pygmalion's prayer for the reversal of the miracle is answered.
Galatea is turned again to stone, (this video clip) with the jewels that Mydas had given her. If he wishes to retain his valuable necklace, Mydas will now have to purchase the statue.
You are right that this is a great work. I have seen this production of Opera Stabile (Staatsoper Hamburg). It was performed in a small showroom and the orchester had been reduced to 4 (!) instruments.! As far as I can remember, it was an approach to present the story in a modern way. It still remains debatable how much such experiments are worth or if they really destroy the work. My opinion is that it depends on the intelligence of the stage director and the smartness of the conception.

A rather amateurish production of a great work. Too bad! Dr. K
