  • Where exactly did you get your balalaika (if you live in the States)?

I would like to begin learning it, but I have no idea where to get a hold of one. I've seen some on eBay for ~$200, but if the price of a balalaika is anything like a guitar or violin, then those aren't of very good quality.

  • from ukraine on ebay. was about $150. they are usually ok quality if they have the extended fretboard (not ending at connection with body) and a scratch plate. dont buy any chinese made ones though! this one is is about 25 years old from a soviet music factory. for a comparison, a $150 balalaika compared to a $2000 handbuilt one, is more like a $500 guitar compared to a $5000 handbuilt guitar. a $80 balalaika is comparable to about a $200 guitar.

Thanks. As far as the difficulty goes, how long have you been playing, and how long did it take you to learn this song?

  • @KittyRokher well this was about 4 years ago, after i had been playing maybe 1 year, i didnt learn balalaika properly, i use guitar technique on it.

  • Oh wow I've never seen your Balalaika videos before. What's the tuning you use?

  • @Jagguar20

standard prima balalaika tuning, A (top string - made of steel), E and E for the 2nd and 3rd string (both nylon)

  • @KittyRokher

There is ban on manufacture and sales of balalaika in USA for 70 years already and Obama extended it till 2020. They afraid it could be used as "soft power" during the cold war

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6

    So just learn Russian.

    Problem solved.

  • good player
