Oscar-winning writer Alan Ball ("True Blood," "Six Feet Under," "American Beauty") talks to Writers Guild of America, West Showrunner Training Program director Carole Kirschner about his journey from TV sitcom writer to showrunner and what he looks for in a script when he's hiring a writer.

The WGAW Showrunner Training Program is a partnership between the WGAW and television networks and studios that helps senior-level writer-producers develop the essential skills necessary to become successful showrunners.
