the process took 2000 days. for the first thousand they's only eat nuts and dring a tea that got the moisture out of your boddy. these were painlful things you had to go through. then they'd put you in a tomb only big enough to let you sit criss cross in. there would be a tube for air, and a bell that you would ring to let monks know you were still alive, and when you stopped ringing, they figured you were dead. they would seal the tomb of. wait a little longer, and then let the public veiw u.
With respect, these are monks who'd attained a high level of enlightenment and focus that they are able to purge all impurities from within their bodies and closed and seal all pores and make peace with the cells and beings within before their true mind depart from our sense world thus their ability to maintain their body un-decomposable state by nature. A great feat from only a great mind can achieve. This is prove of the monks great achievement in his ability to control his mind and body eve
@Raphael685orMist642 yea lol seriously for a person to actually kill themselves and observe it happening to themselves...thats literally a mindfuck. They must spend their entire life meditating to be able to do that and not shit themselves
sadly this is not how you reach enlightenment, this is just the cause of centuries of the branches of budhism that have come about from false teachings. Enlightenment is not found by being a recluse and hiding from the world in a cave until you die. Enlightenment is connecting with the piece of divinity that is inside you, and letting that light shine so brightly that it helps to transform yourself and the world you live in.
There is a new book on this subject called "Living Buddhas: The Self-Mummified Monks of Yamagata, Japan" (McFarland Publishers, 2010), by Ken Jeremiah. It's the only book I've found in English on the subject.

@TyneOdu Try telling that to the guys that ritually starved themselves and intentionally ate poison. These guys are badass in my book.
