Weird Austin Backyard Insect

I've lived in Austin for a year and a half now. In that time I've seen various odd creatures, both in our backyard and around town -- the armadillo ambling across MLK and Lavaca comes to mind. But I'd never seen the likes of this critter I saw loping across our patio chair a few weeks ago, an insect that happened to be the same shades of hot chocolate brown as our long-limbed interloper.

I haven't seen the likes of his kind since.

Praying mantis, I think it was brown because it was on the rattan thingy. In a tree it might turn green.
