WOW this explains everything - The Jerusalem syndrome is a group of mental phenomena involving the presence of either religiously themed obsessive ideas, delusions or other psychosis-like experiences that are triggered by a visit to the city of Jerusalem. It is not endemic to one single religion or denomination but has affected Jews, Christians and Muslims of many different backgrounds.

The best known, although not the most prevalent, manifestation of the Jerusalem syndrome is the phenomenon whereby a person who seems previously balanced and devoid of any signs of psychopathology becomes psychotic after arriving in Jerusalem. The psychosis is characterised by an intense religious theme and typically resolves to full recovery after a few weeks or after being removed from the area.

The religious focus of the Jerusalem syndrome distinguishes it from other phenomena, such as the Stendhal syndrome, which is reported in Florence, Italy, or the Paris syndrome, which has been reported predominantly in Japanese individuals.

In a 2000 article in the British Journal of Psychiatry, Bar-El et al claim to have identified and described a specific syndrome which emerges in tourists with no previous psychiatric history. However, this claim has been disputed by M. Kalian and E. Witztum. Kalian and Witzum stressed that nearly all of the tourists who demonstrated the described behaviours were mentally ill prior to their arrival in Jerusalem. They further noted that, of the small proportion of tourists alleged to have exhibited spontaneous psychosis after arrival in Jerusalem, Bar-El et al. had presented no evidence that the tourists had been well prior to their arrival in the city.

  • Man, I wish this happened to Hindu's. That'd be interesting.

  • "Out of 42 people: 1 Jew, 1 Catholic, 40 Protestants."

  • @flioink ITS PSYCHOSIS THATS THE MIND KILLER HERE, NOT RELIGION.

  • I want all these people to die and leave us alone.

  • All this proves that religion is very very dangerous poison.

    RELIGION IS THE MIND KILLER.

  • Well, the basic religious concept of invisible deities, flying dead angel people and sickness/disease being caused by demons and evil spirits etc., attracts mentally sick people like iron to a magnet. No need to travel to Israel though. They're in your local community and even in your government!

  • @336muslim

They do already have the mental disorder, but the trip to Jerusalem is simply the trigger. If you're allergic to peanut butter but never ate it, you'd still be allergic.

Jerusalem Syndrome is a well documented medical condition, so unless you intend to argue with doctors, I suggest you give up.

  • @DoubIeKiIl how is it a sickness or mental disorder, they wouldnt get it by just going to Jerusalem, they should have it before, it has nothing to do with mental disorder unless they already had a disorder, thats like saying i went to china and i started acting like im chinese, if people got this from going to Jerusalem then everyone who goes or is born there should have it it has nothing to do with mental disorder unless the people who get it are people who have real mental disorders!

  • @336muslim

Do you understand the idea of 'syndrome'?

It's a mental disorder. This has nothing to do with a normal religious belief- these people are crazy and need treatment from doctors. To judge Chrisitanity by a group of crazy people would be like judging Islam by the 9/11 terrorists.

  • hahah crazy people why do so many people from judaism and christianity are always claiming to be the messiah. this to me would show that christians dont believe Jesus(pbuh) was the messiah, because there claiming false messiahs. there are like 100s of christians today claiming to be the messiah and alot of christians believe them, and there have been people in judaism claiming to be the messiah also today, i think there all on drugs.

Revert to Islam there you will find the truth!
