Tinnitus or "ringing ears" is a phenomenon of the nervous system connected to the ear, characterized by a perception of a ringing, beating or roaring wound without an external source. The sound may be a quiet background noise, or loud enough to drown out all other sounds. Common causes of tinnitus include presbycusis, prolonged exposure to loud environmental noise, and such pathological conditions as inflammation and infection of the ear, otosclerosis, Meniere's Syndrome and labyrinthisis.
Systemic disorders associated with tinnitus include hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, neurolog¬ical disorders including head injury, and hyper- and hypo¬thyroidism. Tinnitus may also be exaggerated by severe emotional anxiety or physical stress.
Some cases will resist all conventional modes of therapy. Since this problem is so widespread, an association devoted to the study and management of tinnitus has been estab¬lished. The address is American Tinnitus Association, P.O. Box 5, Portland, OR 9707.
