When Starbucks first opened in 1971 they only had two sizes: short & tall. The short, 8 oz. The tall, 12 oz which was the largest size you could get back then. Then people started asking for more, even bigger sizes!
therefore Starbucks added two more sizes to the menu: Grande and Venti. Grande, which means big in Spanish, is the 16oz. Venti, which means 20oz in Italian.
i hope this clears some confusion for you

I didn't know how the Starbuks system worked, so I asked for a "small coffee", she said you mean "tall", I said no small. She then said, you mean tall again, thats' when I realized they used the term "tall", but she wouldn't process my order till I actually said "tall", so I was upset that she didn't understand common sense and insisted to use the company line.

I never came back as my own protest that still stands to this day. S M L is common sense and what everyone in the world can recognize.
