Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad performing Sin's A Good Man's Brother in Chicago 2003. This is considered the first "Metal" song of all time, having been covered by Gov't Mule, George Lynch, & Monster Magnet. This song alone started a new genre of music. The "Closer To Home" album from 1970 is considered by many to be timeless. It will forever be known as the first Hard Rock/Metal album. Aint seen a night, things work out right, go by.
Things on my mind, and I just dont have the time, and it dont seem right.
Aint seen a day, that I dont hear people say, they know theyre gonna die.
This may seem a little bit crazy, but I dont think you should be so lazy.
If you think youve heard this before, well, stick around Im gonna tell you more.

One just like the other, sins a good mans brother, but is that right?
You tell me that I dont, then I say I wont, but then I might.
You said this is the way its supposed to be, but it just dont seem right to me, and thats outta sight.
Some folks need an education, dont give up, or well loose the nation.
You say we need a revolution? it seems to be the only solution.

  • When I bought "Closer To Home" I was astonish listening to this song.. It was so.. so.. fuckin' great.

  • You know, me too.

I knew this song was special.

So different than anything out there.

  • This song bridged the gap between Hard Rock & Metal. Considering the music that was going around in 1970, this song stands up to metal coming out today. The proof is the song being covered by Monster Magnet, Gov't Mule, & George Lynch of Dokken fame.

  • not mad at anyone on here but the fans 'created' Heavy Metal, if you want to say anyone 'created' Heavy Metal take a look at Blue Cheer and of course, as everyone knows, the mighty post-Earth, Black Sabbath

  • @StayStrangeAmerica

And Grand Funk Railroad gave Black Sabbath their start. Check out my video Grand Funk Railroad-Hard Rock/Heavy Metal.

  • you really think that this is the first metal song of all time? what about born to be wild?

  • Born To Be Wild coined the term "Heavy Metal Thunder."

Do I think it was a metal song, no I don't.

  • Great song. Happy to see Mark still alive and well!

  • Long time since a song gets me like this one. just great

  • beautifully done, sounds great. Love this song & now a new age is opened up to it since it was in the movie Law Abiding Citizen.

  • That is the filthiest mullet I've ever seen! Youre bald man, let it go.

  • kick ass

  • Great Song! I heard this at the end of "Law Abiding Citizen" and told my wife I use to listen to Grand Funk when I was a teenager and this song sounded familiar. Although, I don't remember Don Brewer and Mel Schacher being this dark...Ha, Ha...That's a joke son! ;-)

  • monster magnet does a really good cover of this tune on "spine of god". very similiar to original, as opposed to gov't mule's version, done quite a bit different, but still very good.i plan on covering this song in my band as well. all in all, cool tune w/ simple yet catchy riff.
