I find it unprofessional with real life families playing families. If this was supposed to be an acting debut for Sean Astin the mother should of been played by someone else. (Maybe Meryl Streep.) Secondly, Patty Duke, as many know, is manic depressive, so the emotional, (not the physical abuse) relationship between these two could have been somewhat of a resemblance to their real life relationship. Ms. Duke has even admitted she used to go into serious emotional explosuions due to her problem.
