Hot air balloonists in Phoenix, Arizona gathered today, 4/24/2011, to pay tribute to the legendary Sid Cutter with a ceremonial balloon launch. Forty-three 12" pibals, 143 gallons of helium in kitchen trash bags, hundreds of feet of hot air balloon thread, an official Balloon Fiesta beanbag marker (with a smile!) and a postcard addressed to Albuquerque comprised this contraption. After braving gusts to launch in 20 mile-per-hour winds, the lighter-than-air craft was last seen speeding directly towards Albuquerque at thousands of feet of altitude when it finally escaped from sight twenty minutes later - a fitting sendoff.
