HERAT, Afghanistan (Feb. 17) - The Herat runway extension project was inaugurated Feb. 17, 2011 here at Camp Arena. After a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the first civilian and military aircraft landed on the newly modified airstrip.
According to Herat Provincial Governor, Dr. Daoud Saba, the extended runway is now capable of receiving a greater variety of aircraft and is a major step toward transforming Herat Airport into an international hub.
Further, Saba said the improvement will allow Afghans a more economically friendly method of traveling nationally and internationally alike.
The project was funded jointly by all NATO countries. NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency senior representative Dr. Robert Young said he was proud of his involvement and looks forward to working on other airstrips in the future, increasing the mobility of Afghans.
The runway is now 3,000 meters long, features anti-reflective painting and ICAO lighting.
Travel in and out of Herat Airport is increasing. The number of combined civilian and military movements in 2010 double those of 2009.
Regional Command-West commander Italian Brig. Gen. Marcello Bellacicco stated the project represents a continued coalition desire to improve the condition of Afghanistan and its people.
