Surfing Newcastle Harbour late 80's? pt1

Newcastle harbour is an awesome world class wave that only breaks in extra large swells when most other breaks are out of control. The wave breaks on the inside of the heads. This place is well known to draw crowds, in and out of the water. The wall becomes a grandstand for cheering and astonished spectators, a true Newcastle icon. Although it has become threatened by wall extension, this is due to coal exports. Newcastle is the biggest coal exporter in the world. China breaths the stuff.... Rumour has it !! Check out the Olympics!! Anyway, this footage was shot late 80s by my dad with a old vhs camera. It would be sad to see this wave fade away just as our skies are!

Ah yes... the concrete tank traps, submarine cables, half rusted 44 gallon drums, steel reo poking out and the odd bloated cow, washed down the Hunter River from the storm that produced the waves. I remember it well. Those were the days my friend.

Used to love surfin the harbour on those massive days ,and when a set came you had to paddle to nearly the middle of the harbour ,classic vid buddy of the good old days...Peace
