http://www.contextures.com/xlfaqApp.html#LockCell When you protect a worksheet, by default, all the cells on that sheet are locked, and users can't make any changes.

In some worksheets, you might want to allow users to make changes in specific cells, while keeping the rest of the worksheet locked.

For example, in a data entry sheet, you could allow users to enter a date, select a product from a drop down list, and enter a quantity sold. However, you can block them from changing any of the heading cells, or cells that contain a formula.
