what do they debate??

the person sitting holds a position e.g that phenomena are impermanent. then through the previous years studying of logic, etc the person standing can use any valid reason to 'defeat' or clarify a false position. the aim is not to versed in texts but to test their meaning and your own comprehension.

Haha, this looks like an hiphop battle.

Yes. This is very true, through debating the monks can hear another person view or beleifs, on one subject. The debate is very neccesary, since it helps in many other part of a monks life.

lol you are such a faker MrDuldzin
part of the January 11 Clique.
Give it up, your ruse has failed! Pathseeker is already posting in Chinese, he got so worked up, lol.

Its not fake, debate is an integral part of the Tibetan buddhist tradition, especially Gelugpa and it is a key to the learning process. I wonder how these monks are affected by the increase in violence or protests in Dharamsala though, either due to the independence cause or the protector controversy. I hope it will soon be over. The controversy is very jarring and unnecessary

@backaway2008 I Know this was a year ago, but you're a god damned idiot if you believe something so ridiculously stupid. Chinese are foreigners in Tibet because it isn't a part of China anyway, just like Taiwan!
