Beautiful song by Sir Victor Uwaifo. Apparently the lyrics come from something that Uwaifo claims happened to him in the 60s.
He saw a mermaid, which he called a mami wata. She said to him, "Guitar boy, if you see mami wata, never never you run away."
He even says his name in the song, haha. "Never run away Victor Uwaifo."
It's hilarious, and by that I mean incredible, refreshing, etc.
I call this my "freedom song."
There's also a video someone uploaded of Uwaifo performing this song live, with some awesome dancing in it. I just figured I'd upload the recorded version as well, for good measure.

  • I read in some liner notes that when this song came out it was the biggest hit in many countries in Africa. I can only find two of this guy's songs, he's got this killer song on the "Nigeria 70" compilation.

  • @figaroatl no it was something I had found online that would have been even better if it was an actual record though!....I have a few compilation CD's with a lot of this type of music from Nigeria and some other African countries if you would like I can upload some of them for you online :)
