Congressman Nadler questioned Thomas E. Perez, head of the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday. Nadler pressed for more scrutiny of voter ID laws, which could constitute denial of access to the ballot for particular groups. He expressed his hope that these "malevolently intended laws," which comprise a "deliberate attempt to disenfranchise" minority, young and elderly voters, would be properly examined. Nadler also reminded Mr. Perez that the National Voter Rights Act, which requires social service agencies to provide voter registration, has remained largely unenforced.
