Hi, were you allowed to pet the seal? Here in california, pretty much touching a marine mammal will land anybody in jail. Was the marine mammal rescue guy there too?

@twinkle, there's no way to know. It was hard to leave him. We had to trust that his guardian would take care of things if his mama didn't return.

Yes! No! I didn't know we weren't supposed to touch it. I'm from Wisconsin. I was just so shocked. The "guardian" (someone who lived on the beach) came down and explained to us what was happening - that the babies sleep on the beach while the mamas hunt, but they must be left alone for mama to come back. I asked if touching it meant that mama wouldn't come back, but the real danger with marine mammals is that people pick them up and take them away, trying to help. Which, of course, doesn't.

I did not. I spoke to its guardian on the beach, who said that mothers leave their babies on the beach during the day so they can go hunt, and come back at night to nurse them. Although it was heartbreaking, I had to leave it there, trusting that the people watching over it would make sure it was helped if its mother did not come back.
