There was no clear objective save for to eradicate an ideology from a nation. And said nation was so close to Russia that they just had too much support to become a US Ally at the time. You can't change people's minds by killing them, what the United States should have done had they really wanted to win Vietnam was send money and aid, not troops.
The split itself began in 1959, and happened because the Soviets were starting to favor co-existance, and were appaled by Mao's handeling of the Great Leap Forward. Where as Mao was far more militant. Fear however was the Soviet's greatest weapon in the cold war, and we played right into their hands by betraying our ideals in favor of paranoia, if cooler heads didn't preval during the missile crisis, let's just say the outcome of the crisis was better then the alternative
The one event people of that time failed to take into account, or outright ignored, was the Massacre of 6,000 civilians and POWs by NVA and VC troops. Because of the attitude of the times, no one wanted to believe that communist fighters were still capable of making the same mistakes Allied troops. In the end it was whoever used the fancier words and told the sadder that ultimatly prevaled.
The split occurred after we were already in there. And uncle Ho died. The successive fall of eastern European countries to the communists, the Kruschev incident at the UN, and the Cuban Missile Crisis did lead reasonable people to believe that the communists did, indeed, intend to bury us. Fortunately, some modern historians without a dog in the fight are beginning to rewrite this history without a Soviet-backed SDS type of bias.
Actually Militarily speaking we never lost one battle in Vietam and the Desertion Rates were lower then those of WW2, so you can reasonably call Veitnam a tie and Korea is undecided so that makes the US undefeated
About 380 young monks and nuns who are followers of Buddhist leader Thich Nhat Hanh, have called on the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, to grant them temporary asylum, after they were forced to flee Bat Nha monastery and repeatedly attacked by vigilantes allegedly hired by the Vietnamese authorities. They say the government regards their leader as a threat to its authority due to his fast-growing popularity among the youth.
At the time everyone said it was to containe Communism, almost every decision the US made at the time was made on fear and paranioa about Soviet and Chinese Expansion, we failed to take into account the Soviet-Chinese Split, or the fact Vietnam and China were historic enemies and chose to believe Moscow was dictating everything that happened in Vietnam. Sadly we also allowed the actions of a misguided few to become the actions of everyone who fought in Vietnam
