Narrated by Grammy winner Ben Harper, in conjunction with "Black Thought" Trotter of the Grammy Award winning group, The Roots, WHITE WASH documents a new history of surfing, shattering the white 'surfer dude' stereotype and revealing a succession of African American champions.
Using rare archival footage, Interviews with professional surfers and historians, White Wash tells the story of black surfers from Hawaii, Jamaica, Florida, and California; it is a story of race and sports, the effects of slavery, the colonization of Hawaii, the civil rights movement and the history of surfing.
Featuring a cast of elite professional surfers, including 10 time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater, Triple Crown of Surfing winner, Rob Machado, and Legendary Pro Surfer, Buttons Kaluhiokalani.
While surfing originated in Hawaii as part of Polynesian culture the sport became increasingly the province of the blonde and blue-eyed stereotype that still dominates the sport today.
Black surfers recount their personal journeys: Sal Masekela, TV Host, Sports Commentator, and Actor; Michael Green, Founder of Brooklyn Surfing; Rick Blocker, Black Surf Historian and Founder of BlackSurfing.com; and Dr. Charles Ross, Author of "Outside The Lines", just to name a few.
