In this country music video, Jeff Warren Johnston performs his classic-sounding, country rock song Wedding Bells Never Served Me Well in Austin, Texas. The mission of the JWJ Band is to please listeners longing for that "real" country music sound in the vein of traditional artists such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Johnny Cash, while simultaneously paving new country roads. This particular song is inspired by the moody side of folk and southern rock such as Bob Dylan, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and even Beck. The theme is essentially focused on how time has a way of changing your perspective, regardless of how bitter or jaded it may be. In this case, a middle-aged man who's experienced divorce multiple times describes himself as being locked inside life's revolving doors. He finds his way out by denouncing marriage, only to change his mind again when a devoted and endearing woman comes along. As a result, his perspective changes as he embraces the revolving doors with a newfound "might as well try" attitude as an alternative to solitude. A sad ballad with an uplifting and positive message.

The JWJ Band highly recommends: The Marshall Ford Swing Band, the Atomic Duo, the Love Leighs, Roky Erickson, 13th Floor Elevators, Jack Wilson, Raina Rose, Terri Hendrix, Corrina's Dreamland Band, Guy Forsyth, Milk Drive, Sick's Pack, The Belleville Outfit, Junior Brown, Dale Watson, Robert Earl Keen, and the Bad Livers

LYRICS:

True love it seems, didn't ever mean for me that
Anything meant to be will surely be
I'm near the point where there's achin' in my joints and I can
Hardly pray to Jesus on my knees
The time has passed when I can say at last I'd rather not have
Pain that bad again underneath my skin

Weddin' Bells never served me well
And I guess there's no point tryin' one more time
Locked on the course of life's revolvin' doors
I'd rather get back up on my horse and take a straight ride

Well I can say I've lived another day when someone
Slipped in through the cracks and I can't look back
We merely toyed with filling unrequited voids of love that we
Never intended to lead to such a burnin' need
She keeps my children fed and knocks me outta bed in the mornin' time
And she knows I've been divorced a few times before

Weddin' bells never served me well
But I guess there's no harm tryin' it one more time
Thrown off the course of life's revolvin' doors
I'd rather get back up on that horse and take a straight ride

  • You write a melancholy tune as well as you write a hoppin' jam. Your capacity to imagine an older man's perspective shows a depth of character few guys your age have. Nice work.
