A common defense used by many trees against invaders and wildfires that may damage their bark is the secretion of sap. The chemical composition of tree sap varies among specimens. In this case, notice even when placed in a open flame, only the outside coating of the sap rock burns. During a forest fire, this tree may secrete the sap and prevent its bark from being damaged by extreme heat.

My science teacher told us that plastic is made of tree sap. I see here that tree sap is hard to get a sustained burn from. I just now burned a shitload of plastic with a lighter. It was like a fucking candle.

I've heard of pinetrees exploding in forestfires. Maybe that is why. The internal hot sap reaches a flash point and KABOOM! There goes the tree.
