  • It is a fact that Irish Ballads are sung BEAUTIFULLY by great Irish singers.with 'angelic' voices, however if a Ballad is about telling a Story, and someone with Mark Knopfler's voice is telling it, I say I would easily be touched for he is singing it from the heart. and that's good enough for me, and so long as it makes the listener's hair stand on end, THAT'S MAGICAL.'comparing' between Knopfler and 'Irish Balladeers'becomes an irrelevancy. Each human heart interprets love in its own unique way.

  • Anyone who knows anything about Irish ballads will know that this is a very poor attempt. No heart or emotion for probably Ireland's greatest love song.

  • I think that Mark Knopfler really capture the bitterness of the song. Very beautiful and emotional.

  • Has anyone heard Tom Murphy from Slieverue sing this. His version is brilliant but they exist only in my memory or a lucky few other people ; no recordings.. Lucky people in Waterford and Kikkenny

  • Everyone knows Luke owns this song, but its always nice to hear a different approach to it...and this is nice..its all about different tastes

  • Lousy version, Mark - sorry to say

  • @ekrub205 Feck yes, mate.

  • @MHijikata

thank you soo much , this really helps :D

  • @caoimhc Well, they are pretty different, that's true, nevertheless, Knopfler's versions sounds very romantic too. His singing may be a bit...special, but the instruments are really making it gliding... like a falling leaf...

    Here are some tips:

    Structure : 2 phrases : A & B >> A B B' A

    Phrase A : G F#-G G C Em D G

Phrase B: C Bm Em G Em Am (+D on the phrase B')

    Good luck !
