@panzerfaust375 The Hilux box, is actually a W56. At least, in most 4x4 models. They also had a G52 (carburated) and R151F (22R-TE). The R series is far stronger than the W series. The main bodies of the transmission's, are dimensionally the same. You can use a W58, with the W56 tail, and still have 4WD. Or, you could just get the R154 and use the R151F tailstock for 4WD, and not worry about breaking it. Otherwise, just use a W58 bell on the W56.
The hilux box is just basically a w58 so there are plenty of adaptor kits for them to bolt the 1jz up to it. (and the 2jz-ge came out with a w58 so that bell housing suits the w58 if you can find one at a wreckers). The most stock pwr a w58 was ever put up against by toyota was around 160kw from the N/A 2jz. The turbo 1jz stock already is pushing it without putting more pwr through it and putting huge tyres on your car (increases load). Yep I destroyed one! (1uz with 33" tyres)
I've had a lot of toyotas and by far the hilux was the most unreliable but that was only after I modified it to the shit. 1jz is def overkill for 4x4 and with tyres like that forget about trying to go fast. The stock 4 banger motor I had in mine was shit house. A good swap is the 1g-gte out of the mk3 supra (jdm). They are cheap to do, bolt straight in. Down low they aren't really torquey but using low range its ok and around town 160kw is heaps on full boost.
Motor wise what starts to happen to a converted truck like this when used off road? The 1jz gte vvti sure would flick some mud around in a toyota pickup, but what would you have to do to get one preped up for a mud pit or say water crossings? ANYONE?

yeah iv got one mate. just sayin i heard the 1jz and 2jz conversions start fucking up when they get thrashed offroad

of course, the 1JZ is pulled from, say, a Toyota Chaser.
Hilux's can be heavily abused offroad when done correctly. Look up "top gear" and search for Killing a Toyota.
