@rmcdaniel423 The original instrument is called rabab. It has two strings and an archaïc bow. You can observe it once in this video. Effectively this traditionnal arab instrument is held stand up on the knee and bowed horizontally . During the middle age this instrument was adopted in Europe under the name of rebec and was transformed later in Fidel or Lyra and then became the viola family instruments.
