Tommy never stood with Aaron when the wind blew hard in his direction and Aaron left TWW while the gutless wonder that is the kindest description one can find for Thomas Schlamme stayed on board TWW under John Wells.
AS used S60 to get back at NBC over The West Wing. Good job too!
One of the Exec's had a drug addiction, network censorship, president's bitching over script deadlines, media deals influencing show heads. Irony is one thing .. this was another.
Nate Corddry couldn't have said it better, ".. it's all just a little bit of history repeating". Nice work AS
Now, whether he completely rearranged the story for those final episodes or just decided to tell it the same way with a happier ending, I have no idea.
This is just a guess (and I mean TOTALLY A GUESS), but I bet Sorkin saw the writing on the wall, even if nothing was official yet. I remember hearing an interview with a cast member last year right before they went back to film the final 5 episodes. There had been such a long break in shooting that they hadn't been sure they'd be back. So really, from that I'd guess Sorkin knew that even though nothing was official, that the season finale would be the series finale.
Who cares? It doesn't matter. It was a great show. It shouldn't have been cancelled, but it was. Life goes on.

Wouldn't let me finish my last comment...
