  • A 'phobia' is an irrational fear. There is nothing irrational about fearing Islam . Therefore 'Islamophobia' is a nonsence word.

  • Different minds different opinions. Humanity grows wiser because of people who are able to voice out their opinions without fear.

  • Tharoor keeps making the point that there are different cultures out there who believe differently than us. So then should we change our culture and restrict our freedom to keep them happy? The same people who would not give us that same courtesy in return? Those this make sense?

  • I don't think the six letter word example makes Thoroor's case. That word is about someone's genetics, something noone has control over. Hitchen's case is against the religious thought to hinder freedom of speech, and give it a glorified status as much as the six letter word. They are separate issues.

  • 1:00 apron, Hitchen is right, he is talking about good manners.

  • Hitchens is absolutely right about Freedom of Speech. When we dilute that freedom, we are giving in to the extremist elements who never respect that freedom in the first place and would like to have a world where only their view prevails. Tharoor's argument is not convincing. Right now, i see a certain section of muslim clergy in India objecting to Salman Rushdie visiting Jaipur for an international lierary festival. It remains to be seen what this "pseudsecular" Indian state will do.

  • The difference between the 6 letter word and the cartoons is the difference between hating someone because of their nature compared to having issues with what they choose to believe. People have no choice about their race and it should have no impact on their interactions with other people. People are free (or at least should be free) to choose to believe in something or not to believe in something and therefore their choice is subject to scrutiny. Apostasy is forbidden by Islam - go figure.

  • @slovakmath Sorry for the late reply; at that point one may as well be phobic of the Big Three altogether, because Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have all been horrifically violent and xenophobic at various stages in their histories, including modern-day. Oh for the day when the world is free of these inane, terrible little cults.

  • @CornishHeretic I doesn't just mean an irrational fear. It also means an aversion to or hatred of something. So Islamophobia, justified or not, is not a nonsensical word.

  • @ragnarlava No but thats a nice new term for me to use. Thanks! :)

  • I am an atheist, but I do not like to be generalized as one. I much rather like to think of my self as a free-thinker... Dont get me wrong, I truly am a non-believer in human made gods and it is because of education and critical thinking, and I´m proud of it.

However, instead of calling my self an atheist, I like to call my self an Ignostic/atheist. Are there any other Ignostics out there?
