Welcome back. Maoist rebels in India are stepping up attacks ahead of the general elections in April and May. In the latest incident, rebels killed 11 policemen and shut down a bauxite mine.
Police say at least 200 rebels attacked the mine in the mineral-rich state of Orissa late on Sunday. The mine is owned and operated by state-run National Aluminum Co Ltd.
Four Maoists died during a heavy exchange of fire between the rebels and police.
The company says the open pit mine will be closed for at least a day. The area also houses a company depot full of explosives used in the mining operations.
[M.M Prahraj, Deputy Police Commissioner]:
"Between 9 and 9:30, or even more, about 200 heavily armed Maoists engaged in the attack.
There was an explosive laden van of NALCO which was standing somewhere. It was apparently taken to a distance and looted and some of the explosives from one of the magazines have been removed."
The Maoist insurgents are now threatening to chop off hands of voters if they go to polling booths.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the Maoist insurgency is one of the gravest threats to India's internal security.
