Vermont in U.S. Scot uses Japanese tools to make furniture. "I love these tools, so I work with them" he says.
His desks and cabinets with Japanese taste are well evaluated and sold in good prices.
He has taught by Japanese carpenter how to use these tools and studied and practiced by himself every day. He has more than 80 planes. He performed the thin shaving for us. His record is 0.074mm. But he has one question. He knows these planes are excellent but don't know why it is so good.
In Miki City, cutlery are made in this factory. The master answered that they use soft iron as the base of blade. They stocked over hundred years old irons. Western product uses steel only blade but traditional Japanese blade has both layers of steel and soft iron. After grinding it in best angle, the blade becomes easy to grind sharp plane.
The best skilled carpenter in Japan demonstrated the thin shaving. The record is 0.002mm. Seeing that, Scot swears to practice more respecting people who made his tools.

  • In N.Y. the samurai umbrella is not made in Japan, but they found unique Japanese antique shop named “Shibui”. The owner collects 400s of 200 years old Japanese chest of drawers since 25 years ago. He invested several hundred thousand dollars for them. I’ve never seen the “Chobako funa dansu”. He says that it is used in ships to protect the contents from seawater.
