The attack helicopter has become an indispensable weapon in modern battle field scenario. Today's attack helicopters are fully loaded with a variety of guided and unguided weapon systems, matched with highly sophisticated Electro Optical Systems for acquisition and targeting. Among the weapons that are carried the Air-to-Ground Missile (ATGM) has gained the maximum prominence due to its versatile operational use, as a weapon against armoured targets in tactical battlefield and as an anti-insurgency weapon. The present Third-Generation ATGM carried on an attack helicopter has the potential to destroy virtually any armoured tank in today's anti-tank warfare. The main requisite is to be able to carry out lethal and precision strike using the ATGM and keep the attack helicopter safe. To ensure safety, it is imperative of the attack helicopter to be able to engage targets at a longer stand-off range and low altitude.

DRDO has undertaken the development of 'HELINA' Missile System to play the role of ATGM in the Integrated Weapon System architecture of an indigenously developed attack helicopter. The longer range of the missile is achieved by employing Lock-On-After-Launch (LOAL) guidance philosophy, by utilizing a two-way Radio Frequency Data Link. LOAL guidance of the missile could be in Fire-Observe-Guide or Fire-Observe-Designate mode depending on the choice of the Weapon System Officer (WSO) of the attack helicopter. For shorter to medium range targets the WSO can employ the conventional Lock-On-Before-Launch (LOBL) guidance scheme.

The lecture talks about the broad specifications of the overall Weapon System including the Missile, Twin Launcher, Guidance Philosophies and Fire Control System.
