  • @dannydterrier That' a bit silly, really. All this ya-boo gets on my tits.

  • @dannydterrier They were both great icons. Don't forget the Hurricane, which got more kills and shot down more Germans than the Spitfire. In the air they were all equal.

  • For fucksake P-51 was NOT the best fighter of WW2, it was SHIT and u only got that status because u STOLE OUR engine, it's NOTHING compared to the spitfire, u only have long range, u didnt fight off 2600 German aircraft and EVERYONE in the world prefers the Spitfire rather than P-51 RUST BUCKET

  • @stephfortier Look at this youtube clip on the right hand side 'Spitfire Flight Demonstration- Big V-12 Engine Sound !' and see the comment made by mtllilac. I thought he got it spot on, not you but he did.

  • ...engine run up, etc. might have been a more courteous title...

  • As much as I hate to say it: the best fighter of the war? The P-51. Why? It won air superiority. That's what fighters are supposed to do. Any other fact is irrelevant. I don't care what your sacred cow is or favorite fighter. Don't care how fast, how pretty, how armed, how it turned. It doesn't matter. I don't care what it coulda done if it had come into service earlier, or if, if, if. Get over it. (and My fave plane isn't even the P-51).

  • A Mustang can't do what a Spitfire does, but it does it over Berlin...

The war moved on, and we had to move with it. - Fron pilots who converted from spits to p-47s and P-51s

  • USAAF 31st FG War Diary (when transferring from Spitfires to P-51s): "Although pilots think that the P-51 is the best American fighter, they think the Spitfire VIII is the best fighter in the air."

  • @AFBrat77 Why would you take a Mustang over a Spitfire? - USAAF pilot Charles McCorkle (who flew both in combat), reporting on a mock combat between a Spitfire and Mustang in 1944: "Now we could see which was the better aircraft...a Mustang and a Spit took off for a scheduled 'combat', flown by two top young flight commanders. When the fighters returned, the pilots had to agree that the Spitfire had won the joust. The Spit could easily outclimb, outaccelerate, and outmaneuver its opponent..."

  • @flintrocks Depends which model of each. I would take a Bf109F4 over a Spitfire mk1 for example. Both were great warplanes and two of the best fighters in the world from 1939-44. The 109 and Spit had outstanding climb rate compared to any other WW2 fighters. Only by 1945 had jets like the Me262, De havilland Vampire, Gloster Meteor mk3, Lockheed P80 and He162 outclassed all the propellor fighters in most areas. However the Spit and 109 could still compete in climb rate, and out-turn the jets.
