Is there actually any footage of Mata Hari dancing at all? I've searched for a while and still have yet to find any -_- But nevertheless, this is very beautiful, thank you for posting :D x

The dance is based on photos (I have not been able to locate film of her) and also on photos of Thai and Javanese dancers, because whilst she claimed to have been a 'temple dancer' and had been in that part of the world, she was European, so I thought she was more likely to have seen pictures of Javanese dance rather than much actual dancing. The dance has bellydance movements also, since these were hugely popular in music hall acts of the time.

Glad you like it! The music is Tchaikovsky, from the Nutcracker Suite, the piece is called Coffee or the Arabian Dance. Hope that helps!

She was Dutch-Frisian but lived for a few years in present-day Indonesia and studied eastern dancing. But when she was performing in Paris, serious dancing critics said she did not how to dance (I don't know what kind of dance they compared her to though- ballet? Waltzing? Showdance at the Moulin Rouge?) and her act seems to have been memorable because of her sexy costume, her flirting with the (male) audience and her taking more and more clothes of until she wore only a bra.

Have you been able to find out how close this dance is to what Mata Hari was doing? It certainly seems convincing and has the perfect flavor of the period. Or is this entirely your own interpretation in honor of her? Love it. I wish it were a bit longer.

I love it! I love the ambiance, costum is really nice and you really brought me to another time, I love the soft and quiet choreography and I love that you do a lot of poses. Usually not the type I love but you really charmed me! Nicely done!
