Howard the Snapping Turtle goes back to nature. Having only been free for the first few hours of life, it took him a little while to realize that, nearly a year later, he could do whatever he wanted. But then he was gone.

  • He was just under four inches, but was becoming socialized so had to go. At the end, I gave him live goldfish, but a little guy is more likely to eat carrion anyway. The swamp is off the beaten track, so he wouldn't encounter humans, and had slow moving water. It would have enough carrion, and I fed him up before the release. Likeliest predators would be coons, skunks and herons, but we all go sometime. When I found him he was a hatchling headed away from any water, so he gained about 2 years.

  • not true, it can do well after 6 months, but you have to keep it longer than that, so if you keep him until hes about three, then its ok, i just saw one of my first turtles about a month ago at the lake we go to. Its been three years and the great head start i gave him helped him alot. Keep them until the diameter of the shell is around 4 inches, that way nothing will eat them. There instinct to hibernate will always be there

  • that snapper is dead.... if u hold it for more than 6 months in captivity...it wont survive cuz it isnt used to the dirty water, catching food, cuz in a tank the food cant get away..but in a lake or pond it has to chase, therefor making it exhausted, the winter..ahh man i mean if u lived in a warm place it might still have a chance but the chances are low
