    See the way I get around the hardware store guy looking at you funny is the following true sentence "Yeah, I do sculptures and blacksmithing, sometimes replica props from old movies. I really just need something that looks about right for the project."

    The trick here is the word "blacksmith". There are 3 other blacksmiths in my area and now everyone knows me as the 20somethin guy that's carrying on Old Dave's craft. They'll get me whatever I'm looking for because it's cool to the old folks too.

    For small parts I made a vac former out of a 500W halogen security light, once you take the glass out you just get tonnes of IR which heats plastic really well. You need to orientate it downwards and of course where sun glasses :) I used a second lamp unit without bulb as the vacuum box and some draw slides to move the material between the heater and plug.
