The Stone Soup Leadership Institute organized the first Celebration of Heroes Awards Ceremony on Martha's Vineyard.
This was the culmination of a yearlong Celebration of Heroes Project with the island's schools. During the year, teachers used the stories from Stone Soup for the World to teach students about the "hero's journey" and show how people can become heroes by overcoming obstacles in their lives and helping others.
Civic organizations, businesses and individuals sponsored schools to provide copies of the book to all middle school children.
At Town Meetings, students invited people to vote for their heroes. Walter Cronkite was the Master of Ceremonies at the event held at the Tabernacle in Oaks Bluffs. Designed as an 'Academy Awards of Service' the inspiring event featured celebrities and musical performers. Local heroes from all six-island communities were recognized for their good deeds.
The Institute's first Community Hero Awards were presented by heroes in the book, Stone Soup for the World including Nane Alejandrez, Hulas King, Judith Kurland, Nathan Gray and Terry Mollner
At the event, the Institute premiered the video, In Celebration of Heroes with Walter Cronkite produced by award-winning Galen Films.
The event was televised and rebroadcast as a 1 hour TV special on the Martha's Vineyard Community Television Station.
