Interesting video!
Ive played every weekend at this drum circle for the last 6 months or so.
The psychological bend of the video is particularly noteworthjy - I don't know if the rigid structures of 'culture' and 'subculture' can encompass the Hippie Hill drum circle.
BUT, through the Zen/Buddhist perspective of one's constant battle with the EGO, it is very easy to see. Many musicians there do not play as well sometimes becayse they are fighting their own ego. This is normal with improv music

Nice Video! Interesting analysis to watch...specially from an "assimilated" participant of the specific sub-culture you've documented. It might also be interesting (for you) to note that there is an off-shoot group (of some of the same "veterans" shown here) that meets on weekdays in front of the Flower Clock in front of the Conservatory of Flowers (just north of Hippie Hill). Members of this group consider themselves to be "musicians" and consider the gathering a "jam" versus a "drum circle".

The truth is most of them do not know how to play music, listen to one another, or just be humble enough to hold a basic rythm. The idea is great, but drum circle is not at it's prime at the moment....

Verry cool video.
cool ass video, and good presentation of the idea that some people's views of success or personal advancement extend into regions of experience that are not relative to our mainstream american culture... thanks for posting this, and again good job.

This is the best footage I've seen about this culture.
