During World War 2, many Estonians joined German units on the Eastern front, not because of the nazi ideology, but because the Germans would arm them. Estonians had suffered under Russian rule and were eager to pay back for the torture, mass murders and other crimes committed by the Soviet forces.
Germans were in full retreat by 1944, so Estonians gathered the equipment they could from the retreating Germans and set up partisan headquarters in remote forests and swamps. From there they launched raids against the Soviet forces. Estonians sabotaged Soviet vehicles and equipment, punished known war criminals and slowed the advancing Red Army, hoping to eventually restore Estonia's independency.
