Sept 9, 2008:
If anybody is interested, I currently have a G, Ab, A, Bb, C and D harps ready to mail out today. These are harps that are set up for overblowing. If you're wonder how Jason Ricci or Carlos delJunco harps are set up any of these would be a prime example. Send me a note for more info.
****
I made up the melody to put to this track. It will get refined from this point but I wanted to share how I work on my improv skills.

  • The problem with this tune is that it does go to the fourth but minor and that's not an easy change. I like the sound of the A section in 12th but then I have to play in Ab minor and that means a ton of overblows.

  • Really sweet stuff; extremely melodic. Perfect, really. So educate those who'd like to follow in your footsteps. Give basic info: harp key, bare-bones outlines of the progression--major 3rd to minor 3rd shift in there at key moment, sounds like. I love your solo because it gives the lie to those who have recently insisted to me that overblows just sound.....squeaky. Yours don't.

  • Maybe I should have watched the C modes video first. I suspect the answer to most of my questions were contained in Modes 101.

  • The tune goes from Major to the 4th minor.

Like cross harp then to first position played minor. I actually have a video of the very first time I heard and played though this tune. I'm reluctant to post it because there are some truly huge gufaws in it BUT I go through a few different positions.

Maybe I'll post it if enough people want to see it.

  • I'd want to!

  • I've already posted it. Check my other vids and you'l;l find it.

  • Thank you Adam, that seriously means a lot coming from you. You've been a huge inspiration to me especially when I was younger, I wanted to play funk because of you and this tune is where I've evolved from that point that began with you in 1989. Bb harp in 12th position. The progression is: Eb | Eb | C- | C- F-| F- | F-/Bb | F-/Bb | Eb | Eb | C- | C- F-| F- | F-/Bb | F-/Bb | bridge Ab- | Ab-| Gb | Gb | Ab- | Ab-| F-/Bb | F-/Bb | Eb | Eb | C- | C- F-| F- | F-/Bb | F-/Bb |

  • That was beautifuly played!

  • Alright found it...

  • Sweet piece. I hear a lot of Stevie spiced chromo in there along with a dash of Oscar. You really know how to cook 10 holes.

  • just beautiful. Love it

  • Thanks, Chris. I didn't listen closely enough to realize it was 12th position (5 draw as root, if I'm not wrong.) Jason, too, has done some amazing things in this position. It seems perfectly set up to extract sweet melodies out of what I call the country scale--Allman Brothers "Blue Skies" pentatonics--and I can see now that I do need to learn it. Thanks for the chords; I'll pull out my guitar this morning.
