I bought a "vintage" 1979 Imperial Troop Transporter toy a few weeks ago. It arrived mostly complete but without working "electronics." I used to have one of these (less complete) about ten years ago, which I had fixed.

I tried to fix this one the day I got it in the mail. But I couldn't quite get it... today I decided to give it another go, and... success!

There's a speed control switch on the toy. I cycle through each sound in "normal" speed and then in slow speed. See, this toy being from 1979, features a sort of miniature, self-contained record player inside of it -- the white box with the red buttons. That's how it was done back in the days before microchips and all these high-tech toys that kids take for granted.

To see another toy of mine with a similar record player, look through my videos for the one about KITT from Knight Rider. :)

  • another question for ya azotus, is this thing totally mechanical like a diaphram and needle like a see n say except maybe the batteries or does it have an amp and speaker, if it had an amp and speaker would it be possible to output the sounds on the record to a hi fi system?

  • I haven't done anything with this since I posted that video (well, since I got it working).

The sound is mechanically generated, like you said it's a needle of sorts that plays on the record, and there's a plastic speaker attached to the needle.

  • THIS.....IS.....AWESOME :D!!!!!

  • I bought a replacement one years ago on eBay. [My original one is long gone. Don't know how. Maybe my parents threw it away years ago.] However, the sound FX unit on mine doesn't work yet. I will have to figure out how to repair it. Thanks for posting this video! Great to hear the sound FX again! Easily one of my favorite Star Wars toys from my childhood!

  • Classic video. I've had these sound-bites buzzing around in y head since I last heard them over 20 years ago. Thanks for posting it. ;-)

  • right and the only electrical thing is maybe the drive motor to turn the record, id like to play the sounds on this record on a standard record player, i tried that one time when i was really young with this toy magic mike robot and i tried to get the sounds on the record to play on my record player

  • i bet if you clean and lube the record player mechanism it will sound better, i can hear the dust on the record, have toy cleaned this unit up since the making of this vid?

  • They used the same sound box in the gi joe troubleshooter I think. I remember the radio box that fit the yellow argo atv with the six buttons
